Renovation on the Girls Softball field PDF Print E-mail

The girls softball field is currently undergoing some renovation.  In the past month the infield has been sprayed with round-up, the weeds in the foul area of the infield and the outfield have been treated with MSMA and 2,4,-D, bermuda has been overseeded in the outfield, 13-13-13 has been applied, Mr. Donald Wilson delivered and broadcast 2 1/2 tons of lime, the grass lines have been cut and straightened, and the coaches boxes have been restored with clay.  The on-deck circles are prepped and ready to be poured with concrete.  After they have cured, an artificial turf will be added on top of each pad.

During the fall and winter months the field will continue to receive maintenance.  Spraying will continue in the outfield, the grass will be cut at the proper height 2 times each week, aeration of the outfield will allow the nutrients to reach the root system of the existing grass and newly overseeded bermuda, and a pre-emergent herbicide will be applied in October and in February to help eliminate winter and spring weeds from germinating.

The Alice Allen complex is a wonderful facility for our children.  If we dedicate ourselves and our time to some renovation of each field, it will become a beautiful place to enjoy.  I challenge each of you to take a few minutes each week and attack the problem areas of your child's field.  If you would like to work on a field, yet you don't know where to begin, contact me.  I will gladly meet you there and help you get going.   I realize football practice is being held on two fields.  However, the infields are typically free and work can be done during the day.  Also, the fields are pretty quiet on Saturdays and Sundays.  My dream is to one day pull up for practice or for a ballgame and see pretty and manicured fields all over the complex.  This certainly will not happen overnight.  It will take time and money over a few years.  Although, anything thats done is that much more than was done yesterday.  Our fields have been neglected for quite a while and its beginning to show.  A baseball or softball season is relatively short.  However, the fields have to be maintained all year.  Let's not forget about them during the off-seasons.
